Science Y3/Y4 – Stewardship of God’s Creation – week 2

                                            STEWARDSHIP OF THE AIR

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To recognise the importance of air for plants and animals.

To show the importance of clean air for our health and well-being.

              To define ‘pollution’.

To remind the children of the responsibility we all have to steward the earth carefully for
              future generations.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review the previous lesson.

              2. Read Genesis 1:3-8, discussing how God created visible and invisible things like air. Remind
them of God’s mandate to us to steward the earth.

              3. Talk about air being made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases, including
carbon dioxide. Draw a pie-chart to show these percentages. Ask the children what
happens to the carbon dioxide in the air. (It is used by plants to make food.)

              4. Show pictures of industrial chimneys or polluted areas. Discuss what the air would be like
compared to a clean country area or mountain top.

              5. Consider the area we live in and discuss whether the air would be clean or dirty.

              6. Define ‘pollution’ as unclean, infectious, stained, etc. Let the children suggest what makes
air dirty, eg smoke, pollen, dust, water vapour.

              7. Give the children some pieces of double-sided sellotape to put on window sills around the
outside of the school. They should be left until the next lesson.

              8. Give each child a clean tissue to wipe over some leaves near a roadside to see if the
                   tissue remains clean.

              9. Some children could put yoghurt pots covered in white cloths (with an elastic band) around

the school to see which area is the cleanest. Leave for a period of time.

              10. On returning to the classroom, show the children pictures of lichens which are indicators
                   of pollution.

              11. Let the children write notes and draw pictures of the work covered in the lesson.
