Science Y3/Y4 – Stewardship of God’s Creation – week 5

                                     STEWARDSHIP OF THE COUNTRYSIDE

        Truth to Teach (Source)

Discuss the Creation story with reference to the countryside

To inspire the children to write their own countryside code for protecting the countryside.

Familiarise them with the existing Countryside Code.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review the previous weeks’ work.

              2. Show a video or pictures of beautiful countryside. Discuss the need to care for it.
Remind the children of the parts of the Creation story in Genesis 1 and imagine how the
earth would have looked in those days with no litter, dirt, etc

              3. Tell a made-up story of two children who went for a walk in the countryside and tell the
children to put up their hands when the children do something wrong.

                 Include the following:-
Going through a gate and leaving it open.
Stopping for lunch and throwing their litter around, or in a stream.
Letting their dog off the lead in a field with animals.
Crossing over a wheat field, flattening the crop.
Clambering over a partly broken fence.
Climbing on a tractor to play.
Carving their names on a tree trunk.
Playing with matches in dry grass.

              4. Discuss each aspect of the story, and then let the children work in pairs to write a
countryside code which would ensure that people looked after the surroundings.

              5. Share back, then let the children write a code with countryside pictures around it in a poster
style. Read the real Countryside Code to them.

              6. End the lesson by thanking God for the beautiful countryside around us

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children will be more aware of the need to care for the countryside and how everyone can play a
part. A sense of gratitude to God for his creation will no doubt result from the lesson.
