Science Y3/Y4 – Stewardship of God’s Creation – week 3

                                            STEWARDSHIP OF WATER 1

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To appreciate God’s economy in creating water which can be recycled as we see in the water-
              cycle.

To recognise our need to steward our water supply.

To perform an experiment to demonstrate how water can be cleaned.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review previous work.

              2. Read and discuss Genesis 1:6-10. Let the children share all they remember about the
water-cycle, drawing it on the board.

              3. Split the children into groups with pencils and paper to list reasons why they think that
water is not as clean today as it was when God created it.

              4. Let the children share their results then ask them to share all they know of how water is
supplied to our homes. Show the diagram which they will later have to colour.

              5. Give the children time to write notes on the lesson so far before gathering them for the
                   practical work.

              6. Talk about how dirty water is cleaned then demonstrate the cleaning of water by using a
funnel, filter, jar and some water into which soil has been stirred. Discuss how our water
supply is cleaned using chemicals such as chlorine. Show a water bill to emphasise that we
have to pay for water to be collected and cleaned.

              7. Ask the children to draw a labelled diagram of the experiment, then end their written work
by listing ways in which Man can keep water clean, e.g. by not throwing litter into streams,
rivers, reservoirs; by not emitting poisonous substances into the atmosphere causing ‘acid
                   rain’.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children will hopefully be realising that it is everyone’s responsibility to care for the earth. Our
aim is to leave it as a good inheritance for the next generation.
