Broad roles and responsibilities of the IOC and the IPC
• Choice of the host city for the Games.
• Organisation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
• Promotion of women in sport.
• Protection of athletes.
• Development through sport.
• Promotion of sustainable development.
• Respect for the Olympic truce.
• Promotion of culture and Olympic education.
Choice of the host city for the Games
The methods for electing a host city for the Olympic Games are governed by the
Olympic Charter. Part of the IOC’s role is to choose the host city and ensure the
election process is run according to the rules.
Cities apply to the IOC to host the Games and the IOC Executive Board draws up
the list of candidate cities after thoroughly checking all applications and assessing
how well the city could run an Olympic Games.
The IOC’s General Assembly of Members then elects the host city 7 years before
the Olympic Games.
Organisation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games
The Olympic and Paralympic Games are competitions among athletes in individual
or team events and nominated by their respective NOCs rather than between
countries. They compete under the technical direction of the international sports
federations of the sport they follow.
