The Olympic Movement
The mission of the Olympic Movement
According to the Olympic Charter, the goal of the Olympic Movement is to
help build a more peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport
practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit of mutual
understanding, friendship, solidarity and fair play.
A number of organisations are involved in organising the Olympic Games. Together
they form the Olympic Movement. These organisations include:
• the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
• Organising Committees of the Olympic Games
• National Olympic Committees (NOCs)
• international federations
• national associations
• clubs.
There are rules and guidelines by which these organisations operate. These are
outlined in the Olympic Charter.
International Olympic Committee and International
Paralympic Committee
International Olympic Committee
The IOC is an international non-government, non-profit organisation that
administers the Olympic Movement from Lausanne in Switzerland.
International Paralympic Committee
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the international governing body
of sports for athletes with a disability. It emphasises the participants’ athletic
achievements, not their disability.
The IPC has a number of roles. The IPC and its national bodies ensure that
the mission and roles of the IOC also benefit athletes with a disability around
the world. It acts as the international federation for 12 sports. It supervises and
coordinates the Paralympic Summer and Winter Games and other multi-disability
competitions, such as world championships. The IPC also supports the recruiting
and developing of athletes at local, national and international levels across all
disability and performance levels.
