Promotion of women in sport
The IOC has always played an important role in setting a positive trend in
improving women’s participation in sport at all levels, especially in the last few
decades.
Protection of athletes
The IOC pays much attention to protecting the athletes who are the heroes of the
Olympic Games. In doing this, the IOC has taken the following actions:
• created the IOC Athletes’ Commission in 1981. This commission has delegates
on all other IOC commissions. It is involved in the process to select the Olympic
host city. It meets with the IOC Executive Board at least once a year to submit
its recommendations
• the IOC Medical Commission researches trauma and injury prevention
during each Olympic Games. This is to prevent injury and optimise performance
through the analysis of movements
• created the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 1983, which became fully
independent in 1993. This is an international court that handles athletes’ legal
problems. Its procedure is universally applicable, simple, quick, flexible and
inexpensive
• created the World Antidoping Agency (WADA) in 1999 to combat drugs in
sport and protect the health of athletes. Although WADA is an independent
body, the IOC paid US$25 million to set it up and contributes 50 per cent of its
annual budget
• created the World Olympians Association in 1995 to promote good relations
between Olympic athletes everywhere and spread Olympic values.
