Development through sport
The IOC has a large program using sports development as a tool for local socio-
economic development and for humanitarian assistance. It implements and
supports many community projects worldwide. It cooperates with development
and humanitarian aid organisations and NOCs to improve the lives of people in
                  under-privileged communities.

                  Promotion of environmental issues
The IOC always links sport and the environment. Its policy seeks to provide
resources for sustainable development through sport at international, national and
regional level, particularly at the Olympic Games.

This policy has 2 main objectives:
                  1. to promote Olympic Games that do not damage the environment through
meeting a high standard of sustainable development
                  2. to promote awareness of the importance of a healthy environment and
sustainable development among members of the Olympic family and sports
                    practitioners in general.

The policy is based on the following principles in the Olympic Charter:
                  • to encourage and support a responsible concern for environmental issues
                  • to promote sustainable development in sport and require that the Olympic
                    Games are held accordingly
                  • to promote a positive legacy from the Olympic Games to the host cities and
                    host countries.

                  Respect for the Olympic truce
In July 2000, the International Olympic Truce Foundation was created to promote
peace through sport and the Olympic ideal.

Promotion of culture and Olympic education
The IOC has played an important role in the development of the culture and
Olympic educational agenda. It provides resources to promote culture and sport at
international, national and regional levels, particularly at the Olympic Games. The
                  IOC strives to:
                  • develop the link between sport and culture in all its forms, encourage cultural
exchange and promote the diversity of cultures
                  • promote Olympic education, and support other institutions that promote the
                    values of Olympism.

Olympism has values that encourage qualities of mind, will, body and sporting
ideals to create a special way of life based on:
                  • the joy found in effort
                  • the educational value of having a good role model
                  • respect for principles.
