International federations
The international sport federations are international non-governmental
organisations recognised by the IOC as administering 1 or more sports at world
level. Each international federation governs its own sport and encourages
the promotion and development of that sport. They monitor the everyday
administration of their sports and guarantee competitions, ensuring respect for the
rules of fair play. The international federations:
• organise actual events during the Games
• supervise of the development of athletes practising these sports at every level.
The national federations administering sports in each country are affiliated with
their international federations. International federations stay independent of the
administration of their sports. However, if the sport is seeking IOC recognition, the
international federations must make sure the rules, practices and activities of the
national federations conform to the Olympic Charter.
