Activity 1.9
In your country, what roles do local leaders play in the successful delivery of sport?
Sporting clubs
The structure of sport in the Pacific has many layers. Clubs have a very important
role in this structure. Clubs are the groups that service the sporting needs of their
local communities. They organise competitions, coaches, officials, uniforms, playing
venues and activities. They market their clubs and often play a very important role
in community togetherness. Clubs are often referred to as the lifeblood of sport.
So, without clubs there would be no need for international, national or regional
federations. There would not even be a need for the NOCs, ONOC or the IOC.
Clubs are made up of many groups of people including:
• athletes/players
• coaches
• officials
• administrators
• other volunteers.
