Positive government relations
Another key stakeholder that your club/federation should be developing and
maintaining good relationships with is government. This could be local, provincial
or even national government.
Sporting clubs/federations are always in need of more support (money, political
support, etc.) and if your club/federation can build positive working relationships
with relevant government departments, this can greatly help your cause.
One way that government can support your club/federation is through the
provision of grants. Although this is a key function of government, there are other
agencies that also offer grants to sporting clubs/federations. This will vary from
country to country.
Grants
Grants are funds received from agencies that have often been established with the
primary purpose of giving financial help.
Grants are given for the purpose of meeting these agencies’ own objectives and
strategies, such as:
• government policy
• community development
• meeting the needs of youth, etc.
Sourcing grants
A number of different grant sources are relevant to sporting clubs/federations. The
most common grant agencies include:
• government (local, provincial/regional and national)
• charitable trusts and foundations
• corporations and businesses.
Others may include:
• IOC
• NOC
• European Union
• Secretariat of the Pacific Community
• Pacific Island Forum Secretariat
• Australian Sports Commission.
