General marketing information

Many sporting clubs/federations put a lot of time, effort and financial resources
into their marketing activities. Some do this very well, while others do so in a
casual and unplanned manner. Like any aspect of managing a club/federation, if
marketing activities are not planned well, they are unlikely to work.

                  What is marketing?
Marketing involves a suite of activities, all of which are designed to:
                  • increase membership
                  • increase income
                  • improve image.

Some activities that come under the marketing banner include:
                  • marketing plans
                  • advertising (TV, newspapers, flyers, websites, events, magazines, etc.)
                  • promotional activities (‘come and try’ days, special events, club website, etc.)
                  • sponsorship
                  • fundraising.

Which of the marketing activities just listed is your club/federation using? How
                  effective are these activities?
