Fundraising Competitions
Every year Cerne Abbas SMBC holds a number of events to raise money for charity including two
competitions, the ‘Six of the Best’ and the Cerne Open Triples, this year held on the August Bank
holiday weekend. This year’s nominated charities were Weldmar Hospice care, a local cancer
charity and Alzheimer’s Research UK. These two events and a popular themed crossword were
the main contributors to about £1,700 raised for these worthy causes. The club would like to thank
all those who contributed so generously, participated and put so much effort into making these
events a success.

Six of the Best
Six of the Best
This year’s six teams comprised last year’s finalists, holders Templecombe from Somerset and
Hazelbury Bryan from Dorset. For the second year in a row Holmans made the long trip from Corn-
wall. Exeter’s Wonford and Sidbury represented Devon. The six were made up by a scratch team
from the Yeovil and District League replacing Kingscliffe, who were late withdrawers. The unusual
competition format comprises three rounds of Singles, Pairs and Triples, the top two teams qual-
ifying for the final.

Qualifying Rounds
Multiple winners Wonford just failed to qualify for the final by a couple of points, but Wonford’s
Maggie Smith continued her great record in this competition. Maggie’s team won the Best Pair
last year and this year she won it again, this time with Thomas Perris (see photo), winning all three
games. Last year, competing in this competition for the first time, Sidbury finished third, but this
year they made it to the final in second place.
Sidbury’s Triple of Kim Wright, Malcolm Sheen and Carol Osborne (see photo) won all three
games and the competition for Best Triple. Last year was Holmans first visit to Cerne Abbas and
they finished in 6th place, but this year they topped the qualifying table on shot difference. Eng-
land’s Peter Hore (see photo) won all his three Singles games and the Best Singles competition.
These three teams finished well ahead of last year’s finalists, Templecombe and Hazelbury Bryan
and the scratch team from the Yeovil League, who managed not to finish last!
