MACCABI TENNIS CLUB - REPORT
President: Henry Muscatel
2021 has been another year in which the Club has been deeply
affected by the pandemic. Although we had a few months where
players could practise or represent Maccabi in a competitive
format, it has been difficult to build momentum in between
lockdowns.
The summer competition was played from November 2020 and concluded in
March 2021. Maccabi fielded 7 adult teams, 13 junior teams and even had a team
in the Tuesday night doubles competition for the first time.
The winter Pennant season began in April and most teams played 9 rounds with
the remaining 5 matches and finals being cancelled due to the lockdowns.
The 2020 Maccabi Tennis Club and Victorian Jewish Tennis Championships were
played in December 2020 (at a later time than normal) and it is anticipated that
similar timing will be chosen for the tournament in 2021.
It has been difficult for our members and coaching program with the lack of
certainty and such prolonged closures for tennis in Victoria and it is hoped that the
end of 2021 and 2022 will provide more regular tennis opportunities.
Meanwhile, regarding the strategic direction of the Club, we have some important
projects underway, including negotiating our next lease, investing in our facilities to
resurface our 8 hardcourts, improve the quality and increase capacity of our lights
(currently only 4 of 8 courts have lights that are older technology), identify new
sources of revenue and continue to retain our existing members and attract new
members.
