UP AND AWARE - 7
Paired Exercise:
Culture is a way of life that is unique to a group of people. Some of the things that make up
a culture are customs, beliefs, traditions, language, food, dance, dress, values, music and
sports. Variations in components lead to cultural diversity.
When people move or migrate from one place to
another, they carry with them their culture
and their way of life. When that mixes
with the culture of the new place, a new
blend of culture is born.
Take tea for instance. Tea is
grown, prepared, served and
consumed differently in Delhi,
Darjeeling and Tokyo.
Pair up with a classmate you
don’t know very well. This will be
a good opportunity to understand
the meaning of diversity as well as to
get to know a classmate better!
Both of you have to take
turns to interview each
other. Try to find out as
many things as you can
about your classmate. You
can start with the basics
like finding out the number
of members in the family,
language spoken at home,
etc. Then find out about
things like, where your
classmate’s grandparents
grew up, went to school, etc.
