UP AND AWARE - 6
If you break down an item to its raw material, it is called RECYCLING. For example, If
you give away newspapers to the junk dealer or kabadiwallah, he/she would in turn sell the
papers to a paper factory to make paper again.
Items made in nature are reused and recycled by nature every day. When a flower falls from
a tree, it rots and turns into compost (decayed organic material), which helps plants grow
strong. It also becomes food for earthworms, beetles, ants and other insects.
Exercise and Discuss:
Form a group and discuss. Write down your answers.
Where do you think the following items come from or what they are made of? They may be
made in a factory combining many things but think about where its raw material or at least
one of its raw material comes from. For example, a woollen sweater comes from the hair
(wool) of a sheep.
1. pencil
2. bicycle tyres
3. cotton shirt
4. glass bottle
5. soda can
6. leather belt
7. book
8. rubber slippers
It is important to know where things come from so that we know how to dispose them
off without hurting plants and animals or polluting the air, water and soil.
When man-made material are made or manufactured in factories, they use up energy,
pollute the air and create waste.
