UP AND AWARE - 6

Dear Editor,
I am Santhini from Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. My cousin who lived in Germany
with her family has now moved to India. She does not know much about the

many different things we do in India. I am trying to teach her our customs
and she is learning quickly. But whenever there is a quarrel between us, she
gets upset with me.

I am learning kolam drawing from my mother and aunts. Each morning,

I clean the entrance of the house to prepare it for kolam. I grind rice
to make a fine powder. I pick up the powder between my thumb and
forefinger and rub them together. The powder sprinkles on the floor and I
make dots and lines to draw a pattern. It has taken me several months to

learn to do this and I am getting better at it now. I think of the designs on
my own and I make the kolam every morning and evening.

My cousin watches me and asks why we make the kolam. But when she is

upset with me, she walks over my kolam when I am not looking and all my
efforts are wasted. Please help me.
