UP AND AWARE - 6

Dear Editor,

I am Bhumika and I live in Jamira, Assam, with my parents and my younger
sister. My father works in the tea gardens and he is a tea taster, which
means that he has to sip many cups of tea in a day, which helps the
company decide the quality of the tea and how much it will be sold for.

We live on the tea estate.

There are many tribes in Assam, like the Bodo-Kachari, Mishing, Deori and
Rabha tribes, and they are mostly farmers. We celebrate several festivals

like Bohag Bihu, Magh Bihu and Bwisagu to mark the change of seasons.
It is also a time when we perform the Bihu dance to the flute and dholak
and feast on delicacies made of rice. On special occasions, women wear a
skirt called the mekhala and the men wear a dhoti-gamosa. I am learning

basket weaving which is done using cane and bamboo. I am also teaching it
to my younger sister.

I will be going for a school trip to the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab.
I know very little about the people there and their food. Please tell me a

little bit about Amritsar and the state of Punjab.
