Javi Javi couldn’t help but compare Abigaile to a small sparrow —brave enough to sing even in the
midst of danger, unaware of the hawks circling above her.
Javi: (sternly, but with a hint of concern)
"Listen, this isn’t a game. You could get hurt. You’re not supposed to be here. What if someone finds
you?"
Abigaile: (tilting her head, curious)
"Are you going to hurt me?"
Javi: (caught off guard, stammering)
"No, of course not! But others will if they find out about you."
Abigaile: (grinning)
"I didn’t think you would. You don’t seem like the others. You’re different."
Javi: (frowning, unsure what to say)
"Different? What do you mean?"
Abigaile:
"You look sad. Like you don’t want to be a policeman anymore."
Javi freezes. How could this little girl see through him so easily? He straightens up, trying to regain his
composure, but her words linger in the air.
Javi: (muttering)
"Maybe I don’t..."
Before he can continue, Gelia, Abigaile’s mother, rushes around the corner, her face full of panic. She
grabs Abigaile by the arm and pulls her back, shielding her from Javi.
Gelia: (frantic, but protective)
"Abigaile! What did I tell you about wandering off? We can’t—"
(she notices Javi and freezes, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper)
"Officer… please… I didn’t know she was out here. Don’t hurt her. Please."
3 Using animal metaphors helps characterize individuals by comparing them to animals with specific traits. For
example, Javi describes Abigaile as a "sparrow," symbolizing innocence and vulnerability.
