CHOOSE THE PLATFORMS THAT WILL EFFECTIVELY PROMOTE YOUR STATION
Using Facebook by setting up a page dedicated to your radio station is a must, as is setting
up a Twitter account. Posting interesting content, building anticipation and excitement around
upcoming interviews or competitions and interacting with your audience, should be the main
focus when you use these platforms.
Instagram is an image heavy platform that can promote the essence of your radio station brand.
You should think hard about whether you want to engage on this platform if you are
resource-poor and image-light.
Other platforms such as LinkedIn and Snapchat might also be considered if you think that you
may be able to strongly connect with a segment of your audience by doing so.
To get the best out of the platforms that you decide to use, make sure you think about using
attention grabbing hashtags, tag guests in posts, and work on creating slick social profiles with
engaging images and catchy text.
Research tells us that social media posts that contain images or video prompt the most
interaction. Keep this in mind even though you are promoting a radio station that people listen to
rather than watch.
YOUR RADIO STATION IMAGERY
Radio imaging is the responsibility of the radio production team and involves producing audio
for a live show or podcast. Intros, stings, bumpers, jingles, promos, sound effects, music beds,
sweepers, and radio commercials, are pre-recorded content that are used to transition between
segments during a show, and brand your radio station.
A panel operator who is part of the production team should also ensure that microphones and
music are at optimal listening levels.
Those responsible for radio production need to be proficient with broadcast hardware and audio
editing software.
Broadcast hardware used to broadcast a show can range from a simple mixer to a sophisticated
broadcast console.
