Volleyball Defense
Step 1: Ready Position
- Feet Position: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and
weight on the balls of your feet.
- Arms Up: Raise your arms to shoulder height, with elbows slightly bent and hands
open. This position helps you react quickly.
Step 2: Focus on the Opponent
- Watch the Hitter: Keep your eyes on the opposing player who is about to hit the ball.
Anticipate where they might aim.
- Position Yourself: Move to a spot where you can cover the most likely angles of
attack.
Step 3: Move to the Ball
- Quick Steps: As the hitter prepares to strike, take quick, short steps to adjust your
position.
- Stay Low: Maintain a low center of gravity to improve balance and readiness to dive
if necessary.
Step 4: Read the Play
- Anticipate the Shot: Look for cues in the hitter’s body language and positioning to
predict where they will hit the ball.
- Adjust Accordingly: If the hitter changes their approach, be ready to shift your
position quickly.
Step 5: Execute the Defense
- Use Forearm Pass or Overhead Pass: Depending on the height and angle of the
incoming ball, prepare to use a forearm pass (bump) or an overhead pass (set) to return
the ball.
- Stay Alert: Keep your arms and body ready to respond to the ball as it approaches.
Step 6: Follow Through
- Direct the Ball: After making contact with the ball, aim your pass to a teammate or
a safe area of the court.
- Maintain Positioning: Quickly return to a ready position after the play to prepare for
the next action.
Step 7: Communication
- Call for the Ball: Always communicate with your teammates. Use clear calls to let
them know you are going for the ball or if they should take it.
Tips for Success
- Practice Reaction Time: Work on drills that enhance your ability to react quickly to
incoming plays.
- Work on Team Defense: Understand your teammates’ positioning and angles to
better coordinate defensive efforts.
- Watch Opposing Teams: Observe how opponents hit and adjust your defense
accordingly.
