               GAMLET PICTIONARY

               Abstract

               English vocabulary is the fundamental component in the English language. However, there
               were  pupils  who  could  not  spell  English  vocabulary  correctly  due  to  low  socioeconomic
               backgrounds and low motivation and interest in learning English. Consequently, pupils failed
               to attain scores in Final Academic Session Test (UASA) for English subject. They failed to
               score  the  spelling  section  due  to  their  narrow  vocabulary  range.  Therefore,  GAMLET
               Pictionary was developed to address the targeted pupils’ needs. It is a self-directed learning
               module  designed  for  ESL  learners  who  had  problems  in  learning  and  spelling  English
               vocabulary.  It  is  a  step-by-step  module  that  leads  ESL  learners  in  acquiring  the  targeted
               vocabulary using context clues given, i.e., definitions, visuals and descriptions. This is aligned
               with the latest format of UASA that requires pupils to understand the definition of words. This
               innovation product  is  expected to  address the current needs  of Malaysian  ESL  learners  in
               learning  English  vocabulary  in  a  fun  and  exciting  learning  environment  effectively.  This
               innovation had been implemented to five pupils in a Chinese national-type primary school for
               a  month  and  the  data  depicted  that  there  was  a  significant  difference  of  their  English
               vocabulary  mastery  before  and  after  the  innovation,  implying  that  GAMLET  Pictionary  is
               feasible in developing Malaysian primary ESL learners’ vocabulary mastery. The findings from
               the  questionnaire  also  showed  that  the  participants  held  positive  perceptions  towards
               GAMLET Pictionary as they enjoyed the activities designed in this innovation product. They
               hope to use the innovation product to acquire more English vocabulary in future.
