Term Meaning
Long course Events in a 50m pool.
Most Improved A cup presented at the end of the summer term to the girl and boy who
Swimmer the Head Coach, in conjunction with all other coaches, deems to have
improved the most throughout the year.
National The ASA National, Youth and age-group championships are normally held
Championships in July each year. Qualifying times must have been obtained in a licensed
meet (level 1 or 2), or a County or Regional competition.
Official Recorded A swimmer’s time recorded at a gala/competition held under ASA Law and
Time published by the organizers.
Open Age Group This age group has no upper limit and starts above the last named age
group e.g. 11/u, 13/u, 15/u, Open (16/o).

Oxon & North 4SSC is affiliated to the County Association of Oxfordshire and North
Bucks ASA Buckinghamshire.
PB – Personal A time achieved by a swimmer that is faster than any previously achieved.
Best This should be noted in a swimmers log book and is added to the 4SSC
website via Hy-Tek. Also shown on the British Swimming Rankings.
Pool shoes Recommended and only for use on poolside. At County Championships
and most open meets swimmers must have pool shoes.
Points In many open meets, organizers award points to the top six swimmers in
each event: 6 points for first place, second place 5 points and so on.
Disqualification results in 0 points. These are added together to giver an
overall club score and a trophy is often presented to the ‘top club’.
Recorded Time A swimmer’s time for any swim under ASA Law.
Relays – Freestyle A team of four swimmers in which each swims a leg in freestyle (usually
front crawl); each leg may be 25m, 50m, 100m, 200m.
Relay – Medley A team of four swimmers in which each swimmer swims a different stroke
in the order: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and front crawl.
Referee ASA qualified official in charge of a competition/gala. This person has the
final say in any dispute except where the Placings Judges are in agreement.
