                                FOOTBALL. 1957
                                    RUGBY LEAGUE.
This year Wynnum fielded four teams in the State Secondary School
fixtures. The number of boys offering made the fielding of four teams
somewhat doubtful, but in a desire to give as many boys as possible an
opportunity of playing in football fixtures, it was decided to make the
attempt. Early misgivings became real problems as the season
progressed for injuries, due mainly to hard dry grounds, and winter ills
made it extremely difficult to maintain the four teams at reasonable
strength week by week. A determined effort must be made next season
to induce a greater number of boys to play in Rugby League fixtures.
There is no reason why a school of our numbers should not maintain four
teams at good strength for the whole season.
                                       FIRST XIII.
The year 1957 brought individual rather than team successes. Ray
Wren, unfortunately injured early in the season, was nevertheless one
of the very outstanding players in the Open Competition. Charlie
Stobert was similarly outstanding amongst Brisbane forwards, and well
justified his inclusion in the city team.
Playing against teams from larger schools, Wynnum always proved
hard to defeat, and was never disgraced. Team Captain, Peter
Hamilton, led the XIII. with determination and a fine spirit of clean
             sportsmanship.
                                     8 STONE 7LBS.
In an effort to field as many teams as possible and at the same
time provide opportunities for more boys to participate in inter-school
competition, it was decided this year to field a fourth team at 8 stone
71bs. With practically no experience and only a short period of serious
training, the team went into their match against Kedron, the eventual
premiership winners, and were very soundly defeated by a margin of 36
             points to nil.
We were very greatly perturbed by this, and, although showing
improvement, were beaten by Salisbury the following week, 12 to nil.
In our next match, Industrial I., we were defeated by a score of
             18-nil.
Defeat struck again when we went down to Banyo 20-nil, but in
our match against Industrial II. our hopes rose when we won 9-nil.
Except for numerous penalty kicks against us. the margin may have
             been much larger.
Alas ! Defeat again when we met Mitchelton in our last match, ana
were defeated 26-nil by a much superior team.
Throughout the season, despite these setbacks, the team responded
nobly to the efforts of Mr. Hazell, considered by all the teams, a very
competent coach. May he have more success next year as his recruits
will come from this year’s 7 stone 7 lb. premiers.
