Criteria of Metabolic Syndrome
1 Impaired Fasting Glucose/Diabetes Mellitus
Fasting blood glucose ≥ 5.5 mmol/L
2 Hypertension
Blood pressure ≥ 130/85 mmHg
3 Central Obesity
Waist circumference
♂ ≥ 90 cm
♀ ≥ 80 cm
4 Low HDL-Cholesterol
Serum HDL cholesterol level
♂ < 1.0 mmol/L
♀ < 1.3 mmol/L
5 High Triglyceride
Serum triglyceride level ≥1.7 mmol/L
NOTE If you have 3 out of the 5 criteria
above, you are considered to have
metabolic syndrome.

Patients with metabolic syndrome and fatty liver have high risk of developing
heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in patients with fatty liver.
Hence patients with fatty liver should be accessed for components of the
metabolic syndrome which, if present, should be treated accordingly to reduce
the risk of heart disease.
