What Can I Do If I Have Fatty Liver?
Exercise
Eslam M, et al. Hepatol Int 2020.
▪ Sedentary behaviour is an independent risk factor for NAFLD.
APASL CPG for Diagnosis and Management of MAFLD 2020
30 min/day of moderate-intensity exercise for
≥ 5 days/week or a total of ≥ 150 min/week
or
≥ 20min/day vigorous-intensity exercise on
≥ 3 days/week or a total of ≥ 75 min/week
TIPS Start slow but consistent (start with 10 minutes of brisk walk daily and
slowly increase). Consistency is more important than intensity.
▪ Resistance exercise may be more feasible than aerobic exercise for
MAFLD patients with poor fitness/arthritis problem.
Dietary Interventions
Eslam M, et al. Hepatol Int 2020.
▪ Calorie restriction is the most important factor in dietary
interventions.
▪ Weight loss results in significant reductions in liver fat and
improvement in hepatic insulin resistance.
APASL CPG for Diagnosis and Management of MAFLD 2020
