Chapter Three

Nicole, Nadia, and Nick

ANTHONY AND I were together for approximately six
months before my daughter Nicole was conceived. I was
seventeen years old when sent to a school for pregnant

teenagers. I decided to move in with Anthony and his mother.
He drove me to and from school. When Nicole was born, I
felt a love I had never felt before! Hearing her cry for the first
time amazed me. I stayed with Anthony for a while but left

due to the way he treated me. I moved back in with my
parents.

After having Nicole, I was able to attend my regular
high school. I enrolled in a vocational program so that I could
learn skills that would help me in a business setting. I began

working part-time. I loved the idea of not having to entirely
depend on someone. My mom watched Nicole during the day
and loved having that time with her!

It wasn’t long before I met Hank. Janice had taken me
to his house so that she could talk to his brother. I was
immediately smitten. We were complete opposites in the way

we dressed, musical taste, and our religious beliefs. I had
loved pop and industrial dance music, and he listened to
