2.5 Tips for supporting individuals: understanding responses to change
THE CHANGE CURVE
Every individual is different and each of us responds to
events and change in different ways. This graph illustrates a
typical cycle a person might experience during change. It is
triggered by a ‘change event’ which often produces
surprise or shock. Often it can lead to negativity,
skepticism, anger or even sadness and can be observed as
resistance. Over time many people will begin to accept the
change and grow in their commitment to make the future
successful. As a manager, your role is to help your team
navigate through the experience of change.
People oscillate through these different stages and have
their own unique journey. The next page provides
suggestions for helping support and manage some of the
more typical reactions and responses to change that
people might have.
