b) Esophagus - The esophagus also called as the food pipe is a muscular tube
which extends from the pharynx to the stomach.
c) Stomach - Stomach is where food gets stored, mixed and digested. The stomach
is broadly divided into:
✓ Fundus (upper portion)
✓ Body (middle portion).
✓ Pylorus (terminal /lower portion)
d) Small intestine - It is the Longest part of the digestive tract. it consists of
following parts
✓ Duodenum - it receives food from the stomach
✓ Jejunum and ileum - the jejunum is the second part of the small
intestine lies between the duodenum and ileum.
e) Large intestine/colon - It extends from the end of the ileum to the anus It called
large because of is diameter (and not length). It consists of
✓ Caecum: it is a pouch on the right side of the body which connects to
ileum by the ileo-caecal valve.
✓ Appendix: This is a vestigial (non functional) organ which is attached
the caecum.
✓ Colon: Ascending colon extends from the caecum upwards and then
bends horizontally under the liver to form transverse colon.
The large intestine receives the fluid waste products of digestion from the small
intestine.
f) Salivary gland: There are 3 types of salivary glands
✓ Parotid gland
✓ Sub-mandibular gland
✓ Sublingual gland
