2.3 Emphysema
Emphysema is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs in which there
permanent damage to air sacs or alveoli. It causes shortness of breath due over
inflation of the alveoli (air sacs in the lung). In people with emphysema lung tissue
involved in exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide impaired or destroyed.
2.4 COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
It is a condition in which there is chronic irreversible obstruction of airflow
secondary to chronic bronchitis and /or emphysema. COPD makes it difficult to
push air out of the lungs. The oxygen-poor air w ill build up and there is no room
for fresh, oxygen-rich air.
2.5 Tuberculosis
It is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The
predominant point of entry for tuberculosis infection is the lungs.
The lungs are also the main site of most tuberculosis infections although the
clinical form of the disease depends upon the immune response of infected
individuals. Primary infection with tubercle bacilli is most often clinically silent
and is identified only by it positive skin test which may be falsely negative in acute
infection.

✓ HIV antibody status
With use of modern Anti-TB treatment regiments pulmonary tuberculosis in HIV
negative individual has an excellent prognosis and once the treatment course is
completed without complications mortality risk is minimal.
