3. Explain the disorders of the urinary system and their underwriting
implications.
3.1 Disorders of the urinary system and their underwriting implications
a) Kidney stones - Kidney stones refer to stones or calculi in the urinary system.
The stones fonts in the kidneys and may be found anywhere in the urinary
system
b) Renal failure - Renal failure results when the kidneys are not able to regulate
water and chemicals in the body or remove waste products from blood. Acute
renal failure (ARF) is the sudden onset of kidney failure.
c) Urinary tract infection - Urinary tract infections (UTIS) arc caused by bacteria
in the urinary tract Women get UTIs more often than men. UTIs are treated
with antibiotics. The name of the UTI depends on its location in the urinary
tract. An infection in the bladder is called cystitis.
d) Polycystic kidney disease - Polycystic kidney disease is a kidney disorder
passed down through families in which multiple cysts form on the kidneys
causing them to become enlarged.
e) Diabetic nephropathy - Diabetic nephropathy is kidney disease or damage that
results as a complication of diabetes. Too much blood sugar can damage the
nephron, causing it to thicken and become scarred.
f) Glomerulonephrils - It is a type of kidney disease in which the part of the
kidneys that helps filter waste and fluids from the blood is damaged by specific
problems with the body's immune system.
g) Renal cell carcinoma - It is a type of kidney cancer in which cancerous cells are
found in the lining of very small tubes (tubules) in the kidney.
