THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
1. Describe the respiratory system and it’s component
1.1 Introduction to the respiratory system
Even cell in the body needs a constant supple of oxygen to produce grow, repair or
replace it and maintain vital functions.
1.2 Components of respiratory system
Anatomically the respirator system is divided into 2 parts: Upper respiratory tract
and Lower respiratory tract.
a) Upper respiratory tract
The upper respiratory- tract is located in the head and neck and consists of
nose pharynx and larynx.
i) Nose: Air moves through nasal cavity of nose where it becomes
clean. Warn and dampen so that it can travel throughout the body.
ii) Pharynx: It is a cone-shaped passageway leading from the oral and
nasal cavities in the head to the esophagus and larynx.
iii) Larynx: The larynx is a passageway between the pharynx and the
lower airway structures.
b) Lower respiratory tract
Mlle Lower respiratory tract is located in the chest and consists of trachea,
bronchial tree and lungs.
I. Trachea: Also known as the windpipe trachea is a 10-12cm tube
that runs through the lower neck and chest.
II. Bronchial tree: the bronchial tree consists of bronchi, bronchioles
alveoli.
Bronchi: Bronchi are formed as the lower part of the trachea
divides into tubes.
Bronchioles: Bronchioles are smaller tube divisions of die bronchi
