1.3 Mechanics of Respiration
The respiratory system is situated in the thorax, and is responsible for gaseous
exchange between the circulatory system and the outside world. Air is taken in via
the upper airways (the nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx) through the airways
(trachea. primary bronchi and bronchial tree) and into the small bronchioles and
alveoli within the lung.
Air containing oxygen enters the body through the nose and mouth. From there it
passes through the pharynx or throat on its way to the trachea (windpipe) the
trachea divides into two main airways called bronchi upon reaching the lungs. One
bronchus serves the right lung and the other the left

2.1 Asthma
Asthma is a clinical syndrome characterized by reversible airway obstruction
caused due to chronic inflammation of airways.
Classification of Asthma
I. Extrinsic - In this age group cause of asthma is often linked to exposure to
allergens. Such as dust, Mites smoke, respiratory infection etc, It is called
as extrinsic or allergic type of asthma.
II. Intrinsic asthma - Asthma however can develop again in adulthood and
mostly non allergic in nature.
III. Others - Occupational exposure is another consideration
Sign and Symptoms of asthma
✓ Shortness of breathe wheezing which hissing or whistling sound when
breathing out.
✓ Coughing may be chronic is usually worse at night and early morning
and may occur after exercise or when exposed to cold.
✓ Chest tightness may occur with or without the above symptoms
