Complaints against central departments soar to 2.1 million
Public grievance sregarding central government departments have touched a record high of nearly 2.1 million so far
this year, increasing almost 15 per cent from last year, with just seven departments accounting for nearly 70 per cent
of all complaints.
The highest number of complaints are against banking and telecom services, as per data from the Centralized Public
Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS). About 478,139 complaints were received against the
Department of Financial Services, pertaining to banking services, while the telecom department was the second among
88 central government departments, with 277,869 complaints, and the railways (Railway Board) received about
203,115 complaints.
While rail departments have seen a slight dip in complaints year-on-year, the Department of Financial Services (Banking
Division) has seen a nearly 20 per cent increase. The Department of Posts and Labour and Employment have received
about 186,000 and 169,000 complaints respectively, higher than last year. The Central Bureau of Direct Taxes (Income
Tax) has received about 150,000 complaints, also slightly up from last year's figures.
The Ministry of Personnel has maintained that the increase in public grievances shows the responsiveness of the
grievance redressal system under the present government, with the CPGRAMS portal offering an easy avenue for
people to lodge their complaints. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modihas been pressing at various review meetings
for "systemic reforms" to be brought in to reduce the public grievances in the long run so that the most common
complaints are not needed to be lodged at all.
The government has a high disposal rate of public grievances and the CPGRAMS data shows that nearly all complaints
received this year have been resolved. Out of the seven top departments, which received nearly 1.5 million complaints,
only about 11,370 complaints have been pending for more than six months.
