                        15. How to use CIMCO for MTBF & MTTR

The CIMCO MDC has settings as under :

Above live screen is for testing the MTBF & MTTR. In real situation the values can not be so
small. But here in above example, we have given the values in seconds.
The internal settings in CIMCO are as below -

Create a TIMER MTBF which will start with TIMERSTOPPED[BREAKDOWN] &
                      will stop by TIMERSTARTED[BREAKDOWN]

                      Now the MTBF = TIMER[MTBF]/TIMERCNT[MTBF]

                      &
                      MTTR = TIMER[BREAKDOWN] / TIMERCNT[BREAKDOWN]

In reality if there is some major breakdown, where the machine will remain under mainte-
nance for more than 2 or 3 days for want of a part, then CIMCO-MDC must measure the total
time of breakdown. Hence the main Desktop server should have good quality UPS system. The
server desktop should not be stopped for any reason. It must be on 24 X 7

MTTD : MTTD means Mean Time To Detect. The next question naturally follows: “But to de-
tect what?” In a nutshell, problems. MTTD means the average time it takes to detect a problem
inside an organization. This indicator measures the elapsed time between the start of an
issue (such as m/c failure) & its detection by the Maint. team. Why is MTTD so important? The
intuitive answer would probably be something along the lines of “the sooner we discover an
issue, the sooner we can fix it.” That famous saying “you can’t improve what you don’t meas-
ure”. Putting the two together, we might say that MTTD is important because by measuring
the time it takes to fix an issue, we take the first step toward bringing that time down. And
since it’s been known for a long time that fixing a problem earlier is cheaper than fixing it later,
it stands to reason that we should try our best to bring MTTD down.
