COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
Collection Development Policy is the best tool to be used in making a systematic assessment of
the collection. It organizes the process of systematically analyzing and describing a library collection.
Helps collection developers to set desired collection goals and serves as guide in making decision
regarding acquisitions, collection development, resource sharing, funds allocations, budget requests,
grants and preservation. It also serve as a summary report to be presented to the accrediting agencies,
consultants, college administrators, head of institutions and library board committee, to build base long-
range planning and administration .
SELECTION OF LIBRARY RESOURCES
THE CRITERIA for SELECTION
Selection of library materials is a joint responsibility of the academic staff and the
librarian for the planned growth of the library collection.
A. BOOKS
000-099 GENERALITIES – (Humanities, Research, Computers, and Information Technology,
etc.)
Educational significance
Contribution that the subject matter makes the curriculum and the interest of the students
and faculty.
Recommendations based on the preview and examination of materials by professional
personnel
Validity, currency, and appropriateness of materials.
Availability of materials on the subject.
100-199 PHILOSOPHY & PSYCHOLOGY – (Philosophy, Psychology, Ethics, Logic etc.
Significance of subject matter to support the curriculum
Current and/permanent value
Relationship to materials already in the collections
Recommendations based on the preview and examination of materials by professional
personnel and students.
Reputation and significance of author, producer and publisher.
300-999- SOCIAL SCIENCES – (Sociology, Economics, Laws, Constitution & Gov’t.,
Education, Service Industry, etc.
Educational significance needed by each program
Assessment of materials for a comprehensive collections
Relationship to materials already in the collections
Reputation and significance of author, producer and publisher.
Integrity/ Moral Values
Validity, currency and appropriateness of materials.
000 – 499- LANGUAGES – (Linguistics, Writing, English Languages, Grammar and Composition,
Communication Skills, Study and thinking skills, Filipino Language, etc.)
