OFFICER WELLNESS
Without our people, this organization would not exist. This
department recognizes the importance of keeping our officers
healthy and has implemented programs to enrich their physical,
mental, and spiritual well-being.
✓ Officers are allowed 30 minutes per shift to work out
and a facility is provided within the police building.
✓ In 2021, the department also started a chaplain
program. The chaplains are staff from local churches,
and they have made themselves available to our
officers 24/7. These chaplains regularly ride out with
our officers.
✓ We understand the importance of family and life
outside of work. To help with that, we rotate every 4
months. The longest an officer must work nights
before seeing a 4-month day shift is 8 months (Our
schedule is not based on seniority like other agencies).
We also work a schedule that allows our officers to
have every other weekend off.
✓ To keep our officers resilient, our department provides
continuous training on Emotional Survival for Law
Enforcement through our online training portal. To
reinforce these principles, every officer is provided
with a copy of Dr. Gilmartin’s book to reference on
their own time.
✓ The town provides a First Responder Support Program
that is staffed 24/7 by current and former first
responders. This program also includes free app based
training and peer support in subjects like financial
wellness, stress management, and marital/family
counseling.
