                                                                                             Richard Gunther

In November, polar bear mothers begin to make their dens, so
when their cubs are born they will have a safe and warm place
to live during the Arctic winter.
The mother's coat is double-layered and very warm, but her babies
will have hardly any hair, so will need protection.
First the mother selects the best snow - last year's - because it is
              well-compacted and dry.
She begins by digging a tunnel, about 2meters long, then she goes
              up and adds a threshhold.
After that she digs a vaulted, or domed room about 12 meters long.
(Step that out and see how large it is!)
Having finished this clever engineering work, she might also add
              up to five extra rooms.

How does the polar bear mother know how to build the den?
How does she know her cubs neeo-a warm place to live?

God who made bears gave her this wisdom.

Warmed by the bear's body the den's temperature can go
as high as 37 degrees F.
