Amazing Creations 19
Richard Gunther
Most birds build nests, and if you are observant, you can usually
tell which kind of bird made which nest.
Some birds, of course, do NOT build nests, and some take
advantage of some other creature's hard work.
The elf owl is one such bird. (Also the cactus wren and gilded flicker)
It finds a hole in a cactus and moves in.
What a great place to live!
The cactus has spines to deter predators, it is also strong, and
quite cool, and high above the ground for a good view.
But consider for a moment the cactus nest.
Before the owl ever moved in, some creature landed carefully on
the cactus and began chipping away at it.
Gradually a small hole was made.
Days of hard work later and a hole was picked out.
At the halfway point, the hole was no use to any bird.
How does the maker of the hole, the original owner, know how to
make the nesting cave?
So many things are
done in Nature which
humans assume were
done because of
intelligent fore-planning,
but they are not. It is
due to inbuilt wisdom,
placed in the creature's
brain by the God who
created it.
