simply must be our primary goal as humankind here on this
earth.
I mean, what else could it possibly be? Making money?
Important, perhaps, but not the Prime Directive, if I may
use a fun Sci-Fi reference. If you think about it, just about
everything we do can come down to how we do it with
each other, and as history shows time and time again, when
we are successful at it, it is a very good thing for everyone
involved.
So, why then, does getting along in this world seem to be
the absolutely hardest thing for humans to do? Why are so
we incredibly good at hurting each other? Why do we
repeatedly exploit, mistreat, injure, subjugate, marginalize,
dominate, dehumanize, murder, and otherwise disparage
each other on a routine basis?
The plain truth is that we very often seem to derive various
levels of pleasure and satisfaction when someone else is
experiencing misfortune. The Germans have a word for it,
schadenfreude, which can be translated to Joy In Harm.
Ugh. Its ultimate manifestation is murder, and there is no
shortage of that. So where does it come from?
We have already spoke about why we may be here in a
general sense, and we have been speaking about gaining
spiritual growth and enlightenment. Whether joy in harm
can be traced to eons of years of early men fighting for
territory, food, etc. and feeling very good about it when
they win, or some kind of intelligent plan by our creator, or
both, I can only conclude that our primary job here is to
find a way to live in peace and harmony with the world and
everyone in it.
