                                   Get Unique Creative Teaching Ideas

Learn creative techniques how to get your students to: solve quadratic equations in 5 different
ways; graph quadratic functions in 3 forms – standard, vertex, factored – using the “parabola”
dance. Given the graph, write the quadratic equation in all 3 forms. Graphing calculators will be
provided but the goal is to do these things “by hand.”

               Thursday Session E19 2:40 - 4:00 102C

                         Building Thinking Classrooms Beyond Algebra

Don't let the title scare you. The content requires only an entry-level understanding of areas of
common geometric shapes. Participants will be immersed in a complete lesson incorporating
all 14 practices of Peter Lilejedahl’s Building Thinking Classrooms. We will explore the area
under a curve and the accumulation function. After a brief introduction, participants will be
divided into random groups and will work on Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces (VNPS) as I
model instructional strategies that move them through all 4 toolkits. The workshop will
conclude with time for reflection and debriefing.
