5. Tickets are given when security staff can be spared to patrol
the parking lots.
6. No penalty is assessed for those who do not pay the fines.
Opinion 1, from a Commuter Student
Obviously, the current system is not working. We have three clearly
marked parking zones, but people park wherever they choose, and
security staff patrol only when they have nothing else to do. The
school needs to hire someone full time to patrol the parking lots. If
fines are collected, perhaps people will obey the rules. If fining
does not work, stiffer penalties need to be enforced. The parking
regulations themselves need no change. It is fair that faculty park
close to the classroom buildings, and students housed on campus, who
have the benefits of a shuttle to the campus buildings, park farthest
away if they choose to drive.
Opinion 2, from a Student Who Lives on Campus
Obviously, the current system is not working. The three parking
zones are a joke, since no one is ever fined and security rarely
patrols. In fact, security personnel have more important things to do
than to patrol the parking lots, and this petty task should be
removed entirely from their duty roster. The parking regulations
themselves are the problem. Faculty and commuter students get
privileged parking, while those of us who pay extra to live on campus
get the leftovers. The system is inherently unfair. A first-come,
first-served parking system would be fair to everyone.
