be controlled. Many cities are filled with the deafening
roar of large trucks, and the low rumble of an interstate
highway is audible for miles in some places. Noise
barriers around interstates and the development of
quieter engines are two possible ways to mute the
deafening roar of large trucks.
Finally, truck traffic through residential areas needs to be
strictly limited. As cities and towns become more spread
out and roads become better, trucks are encroaching on
residential areas. They move cargo over roads that are
not built for heavy vehicles. Their noise and pollution
disturb the peace of the neighborhood, and their speed
endangers children who play or ride their bikes in the
streets. Laws are needed to preserve the peace of
residential neighborhoods by keeping heavy trucks on
the interstates and major roadways that are built to
withstand truck traffic.
The trucking industry is essential, but like any other
industry, it must be regulated to preserve safety, prevent
pollution, and preserve the peace of residential
neighborhoods.
