21. What are some examples of business activities where perfection is
the only acceptable standard for performance?
22. Should managers delegate controlling activities to employees and
employee teams? Why or why not?
MAKE CONNECTIONS
23. Teamwork Form a team with three or four other students in your
class to analyze motivation theories. As a team, develop a list of
at least 15 things you believe motivate employees to perform well.
After completing the list, prepare diagrams using a computer graph-
ics program or on separate sheets of paper that illustrate each of the
three motivation theories discussed in the chapter. Then add your
team’s motivating items in the appropriate locations on each of the
three illustrations. Present your diagrams to the other teams and
provide reasons for your decisions about the motivating items and
the theories.
24. Mathematics The following chart shows several items from a company’s
budget. Column 1 shows the categories for which a budget amount
has been determined. The budgeted amounts are shown in Column 2
and the actual amounts are shown in Column 3. Complete the chart
by calculating the variance between the budgeted and actual amounts
(Column 4) and the percentage increase or decrease (Column 5).
Budget Category Budget Actual Variance % or
Sales $680,000 $720,000
Merchandise returns 11,000 12,500
Cost of goods 229,400 240,000
Operating expenses 52,000 46,500
Administrative costs 34,000 31,500
Marketing expenses 306,000 350,500
Net profit 47,600 39,000
25. Writing Choose one of the following statements that best represents
your beliefs. Write a one-page paper defending the statement and
suggesting why the other statement is not correct in your opinion.
a. The best way to develop management skills is to work for a
company for several years and observe successful managers
doing their work. You can’t learn management from a book.
b. Management in the 21st century is very different from manage-
ment in the past. The best managers take classes to study man-
agement activities and motivation theories rather than relying
on experience.
26. Research Gather information on the Internet about the growing
problem of identity theft. Use a computer and presentation soft-
ware to identify steps consumers can take to protect their personal
information.
