     Fishbone

A fishbone diagram is a cause-and-effect diagram that shows the relationship between
the effects of problems and their causes. This diagram depicts every potential cause of

a problem and the effect that each proposed solution will have on the problem. This
diagram is also called an Ishikawa diagram after its developer, Kaoru Ishikawa.
Brainstorming sessions are a great way to construct a fishbone diagram. The
participants can help identify every possible cause of the problem. Let’s say your house
painting business is experiencing some unhappy customers. They are unsatisfied with
the quality of the finished paint job. Some of the causes might be the supplies, the

people performing the work, equipment failures, or process problems. Figure 10.2
     shows an example cause-and-effect diagram.
