PRIDE:
Performance Recording, Integration, Display, and Evaluation
can query and obtain exercise reports. Doctors can ensure that their patients are
exercising neither too little nor too much; health clubs can integrate exercise class
data with personal exercise data; insurance companies can use that data to adjust
policy rates for policy holders with healthy lifestyles; and employers can assess the
effectiveness of investments they make into improving employee health.
A prototype of this system was developed by a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Romero Flores,
for use in his practice. The system was popular and helped patients recover from
cardiac surgery, at least as long as Flores was pushing it in his own practice. Flores
hoped to license this system to other doctors, but he had no success.
Zev Friedman is one of Dr. Flores’s patients and was among the first to benefit
from the PRIDE system. Friedman earned considerable wealth starting and
selling small businesses over the past 30 years, and he liked what he
experienced with PRIDE. So, during an office visit, Friedman asked how
the system was being received. Knowing that Flores is a cardiologist
and not a business professional, he wasn’t surprised to learn that it
wasn’t getting very far. Friedman thought that with a refocus of its
marketing and with experienced management, PRIDE could be a
success. Accordingly, he bought the company for a small amount
of cash and a royalty agreement with Flores. Using his business
contacts, he then found and hired a new general manager, Jared
Cooper, and a marketing professional, Nicki Jensen. He kept
James Wu, who had been the technology manager under Flores.
