AW: I’m currently part of RBC Global Asset Management as an Associate Portfolio Manager. My daily responsibilities include
trading funds, studying the characteristics of different asset classes, and working with various portfolio managers to determine
the optimal strategic and tactical asset mixes for our portfolio solutions.
AL: I have been with RBC for over 25 years, and my first 17 years with the bank had been spent doing various roles in retail
banking. I spent the next 3 years in commercial banking which gave me a chance to implement various initiatives with our
partners in wealth management. My current role involves working with international clients, many of whom are ultra high net
worth families.
PS: I have been with TD for 5 years, and I currently manage several technical teams that include over 100 people. In the past I
spent many years working in the U.S. financial system, including stints with insurance firms.
Ashley Warburton
Anthony Lam
Pengfei Sun
MY: Can you tell us a little about how you got started in your career?
AW: Looking back, I always wanted to do something that I enjoyed. I initially held various roles in the banking industry, starting as
a bank teller. After several different roles in the bank I developed a deep interest in finance and wealth management. I had the
fortune of having coffee with a senior executive who told me that the world is divided into specialists, generalists, and sales
people. I knew that I wanted to become a specialist given my strong quantitative background, and having “soft skills” such as
communicating clearly was also a big asset. My advice would be to keep an open mind and be open to trying different things.
AL: An important turning point in my career was when I was still at the retail bank, I didn’t think I was a good fit for a management
role. My manager at that time convinced me otherwise and I found that I was very good at it. When you’re young, you should
always give a chance to new opportunities, don’t be afraid of failure. I believe that newcomers to an industry should continue to
challenge new frontiers to expand their skill sets which will help them grow. Even if you don’t think you’re ready, don’t be afraid
to take an opportunity if it is offered.
PS: I have always been a data scientist. In my early professional career, I loved computer programming and the job gave me lots of
freedom to do things at my own pace. However, as I progressed in my career, I found I wasn’t so good at managing the non-
technical aspects of the role. There is an importance of being able to communicate your self-worth at the workplace, especially in
North America. If you are truly good at your job, someone will notice. But before that, you need to make sure you have a
marketable skill set.
