    Ashley Warburton

    Pengfei Sun

MY: What are some desirable traits you like to see in job candidates these days?

AW: It is important to start networking early, especially within your own company. In my previous role I cooperated very closely
with the portfolio management teams, and since I worked directly on the portfolio solutions I became an expert at it. This gave
me an edge during my own interview process. The CFA charterholder is also very important, as it is a key credential that
investment managers like to see. More importantly, it is worthwhile to keep increasing your own social circle, improve your soft
    skills.

AL: I agree with Ashley. I see many job candidates with impressive credentials like an MBA or are CFA charterholders, but these
are now considered table stakes. It’s worth asking yourself - how do I stand out? When I worked my way through the bank, I
noticed that some of my colleagues were moving up the ranks faster despite owning a higher level of technical skills myself. What
I discovered was that they were more adept at communicating their ideas through stories. This is very different from what I was
taught growing up in a traditional Asian household. I improved my ability to communicate by writing down and studying the
common phrases and words used by some of my colleagues, and I was never afraid to ask questions. Language and culture are
two important pillars in determining your success at a big company, so taking your time to learn the culture and not being afraid
to try new things are things I like to see in job candidates.

PS: A trait I find helpful is determining job success is one’s curiosity. In today’s work environment, people are given only pieces of
responsibilities. When the machine is working well, it’s great. However, the individual may not necessarily improve their craft
because they are oblivious to other pieces of the same puzzle. This is especially important when working in a team. The ideal job
candidate should be a thoughtful person, someone who is curious and not confined by the responsibilities they are given.
