Information, Communication & Technology

Consider the law and practice relating to intellectual property protection of computer-related
technology, including as technical subject matter items such as computers, computer
programs and integrated circuits. It includes legal subject matter, patents, copyright, trade
secrets and protection. The committee monitors proposals for enactment of new laws and
regulations and for amendment of existing laws and regulations, and makes recommendations
to Council. The committee also monitors current developments in case law and technology
and considers the need for new laws or regulations to address such developments.

Intellectual Property Trade Policy
The Intellectual Property Trade Policy Committee has the responsibility of examining trade
agreements and implementing legislation, the various proposals that have been placed before
the member countries of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and counselling the
Government of Canada on the policy that should be adopted by Canada in relation to
intellectual property trade matters.

International Patent Issues
This committee is charged with monitoring developments in patent law harmonisation and
practice within WIPO (including PCT) as well as the larger international community,
monitoring Canada's position with respect to international patent reform, and identifying
areas of Canadian legislation and regulation in need of reform.

International Trademark Issues
This committee is charged with monitoring developments in trademark law and practice within
WIPO as well as the larger international community, studying Canada’s possible compliances
with international trademark treaties (including the Madrid Protocol), and identifying areas of
Canadian legislation and regulation in need of reform.

Intervention
The members of the Intervention Committee are appointed by Council, as per IPIC’s Intervention
Policy.

The Intervention Committee is responsible for the following activities: monitor or identify
judicial and administrative decisions which involve significant issues of law or practice which
affect intellectual property; make recommendations to IPIC regarding matters in which IPIC
may want to intervene; review and evaluate requests for intervention; where a request for
intervention has been approved: supervise Intervention Counsel on all cases where IPIC
intervention is sought; develop and approve all submissions made before the Court by the
Intervention Counsel; and provide status reports to Council on all cases where IPIC intervention
is sought.
