Licensing
The general mandate of this committee is to deal with any matters relating to licenses or
waivers of intellectual property. This may involve proposing new legislation (where thought
appropriate either to correct a problem or to make licensing or waiving easier) and to advise
the profession of problems in practice.
Life Science
Monitor and report upon existing and prospective Canadian legislation and practice focusing in
particular on the Patent Act and Rules and CIPO practices as they relate to biotechnological
subject matter.
Litigation
This committee examines the law, practice and procedure respecting intellectual property
litigation. The Committee also provides case summaries for the Bulletin.
Patent Legislation
The object of this committee is to monitor proposals for the amendment of the Patent Act and
Patent Rules and any other legislation relating to patents including PCT matters as they affect
national legislation, and to suggest desirable amendments of the Act and Rules and other
patent-related legislation.
Patent Practice
The committee identifies problems of policy or practice which relate to practice before the
Patent Office, alerts the Patent Office, and seeks improvements via discussion of the issues in
writing or by meeting with representatives of the Office. The Committee also reviews
proposed changes to patent practice or policy and prepares comments and recommendations
to be submitted by the Institute to the Patent Office.
Trademark Legislation
The object of this committee is to monitor proposals for the amendment of the Trademarks Act
and Trademark Regulations and any other legislation relating to trademarks, and to suggest
desirable amendments of the Act and Regulations or other trademark related legislation.

The Committee identifies problems of policy or practice which relate to practice before the
Trademarks Office, alerts the Trademarks Office, and seeks improvements via discussion of
the issues in writing or by meeting with representatives of the Office. The Committee also
reviews proposed changes to trademark practice or policy and prepares comments and
recommendations to be submitted by the Institute to the Trademarks Office.
