iang “Sanmana-Kalong”
Wa source of Lanna pottery
“Wiang Sanmana” was built on two adjacent ridge areas
connected by ditches and berms where some parts functioned as barrages
used in the city. The northern city called “Wiang Noi” was built before
the southern, larger city, called “Wiang Pa Bong Luang” or
“Wiang Luang”. The city walls and moats of Wiang Luang, constructed in
“Muang Pom Phu Khao” style had deep moats surrounding
the edges of the area and were used for enemy protection. The areas
were divided into small parts with dwellings constructed along the slopes
down to farming plains. There was a gorge between Wiang Luang and
Wiang Noi and the evidence showed that an earthen dyke
was built between the two cities to retain water. It was later restored and
today it is used as a water storage dam in the community.
“Wiang Kalong” was located on the slant, which acted as a watershed
between the Wang River basin in the east and the Lao River basin
in the west. Its city walls and moats were built around the watershed
in the same pattern as Muang Pom Phu Khao. Along the edges
of the hilly area were the city walls and deep moats used for protection.
The settlement was first done in the south by digging ditches to surround
each part of the area where Wat Wiang Kalong is now situated.
The city was later enlarged by digging single ditches with two side berms
to surround the slant edges as well as the city walls and moats in the
N
south to form triple moats. In the northern part of the city, an extension
was also built to cover an area of about 350 rais by constructing city
walls and moats along the watershed. This area is now
200 m.
